HW2010 Health Initiatives: Violence Prevention

Preventive Health Care     Chronic Disease Prevention     HIV / AIDS
Responsible Sexual Behavior     Substance Abuse      Violence Prevention

PROBLEM STATEMENT:  One of the major issues that Wilmington is facing is gun violence.  Between January 1999 and March 2002, there were 182 shooting incidents resulting in 199 victims.  A handgun was used in 94% of the shootings.  Eighty-eight percent of the victims suffered non-fatal injuries but there were 31 homicides.  In 34% of the shootings, drugs were verified  to be involved.  However, the real percentage is probably much higher given the other circumstances of the incident.  Robbery was the motive in another 25% of the shootings.

GOAL:  To reduce violence in Wilmington by increasing public awareness, education and improving quality of life issues through the coordination of efforts of existing programs and the development of new resources.
